At Google’s I/O 2025 developer conference, co-founder Sergey Brin encouraged retired computer scientists to come back to work. He said the current advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer a huge opportunity that should not be missed.

Brin, who stepped down from Alphabet in 2019, is now actively involved again, especially with Google’s DeepMind team working on the Gemini AI assistant.

During a talk with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Brin called this moment in AI “a greater cusp of technology” than previous changes like the rise of the internet. He believes the new AI tools will solve big problems and create new chances for innovation.

Brin’s return follows the rapid growth of AI after OpenAI’s ChatGPT launched in 2022. He said Gemini is expected to be the first true artificial general intelligence (AGI), meaning it can perform any intellectual task a human can.

Before this, Brin had focused on projects like airships and Parkinson’s research. His renewed focus on AI shows how important this field is for the future.

Brin’s clear message is that retired computer scientists have valuable skills that are needed now more than ever. The AI revolution is here, and their expertise can help shape what comes next.
