FBI Warns AI Voice Scams Are Targeting U.S. Officials

The FBI has issued a warning that malicious actors are using AI-generated voice messages and text messages to impersonate senior U.S. government officials in a growing cyber scheme aimed at stealing personal account access.

The agency said these impersonation tactics are being used to trick current and former federal and state officials, along with their contacts, into clicking links that lead to fake websites designed to steal login credentials.

These campaigns begin by establishing trust through texts, followed by fake voice messages that mimic real officials.

The FBI says attackers use these methods to gain deeper access, which could be used to target more government personnel, steal sensitive data, or even request money or information.

The FBI did not disclose how many people have been affected or whether these attacks are linked to cybercriminals or state-backed actors.

This warning follows a December 2024 alert where the FBI noted that AI is increasingly being used to generate fake text, images, audio, and video for crimes such as fraud and extortion.
