OpenAI has officially launched its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models in ChatGPT, giving users faster and smarter tools for tasks like coding and instruction following.

The company began rolling out the GPT-4.1 model to users subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team. At the same time, it’s offering the GPT-4.1 mini model to both free and paid users. This update also removes the older GPT-4.0 mini model from the platform.

OpenAI says GPT-4.1 is better at coding and following instructions compared to GPT-4o, while also running faster than its previous models. This makes it a strong option for software engineers and power users.

Although GPT-4.1 was first released in April through OpenAI’s developer API, it received criticism for launching without a full safety report. Some researchers said OpenAI was becoming less transparent. But OpenAI responded by saying GPT-4.1 isn’t a “frontier” model, so it doesn’t require the same level of safety reporting.

On Wednesday, OpenAI addressed these concerns by launching a new Safety Evaluations Hub, where it will publish internal safety test results more regularly.

This update comes as competition grows in the AI space. OpenAI is reportedly close to acquiring Windsurf, a major AI coding tool. Meanwhile, Google has updated its Gemini chatbot to connect more easily with GitHub, signaling a push toward better AI coding support.

With GPT-4.1 now part of ChatGPT, users can expect faster responses and smarter assistance, especially when working with code or complex instructions.
