Sony is rolling out a new system software update for PlayStation 5, bringing two fan-requested features to enhance the user experience: Audio Focus and the return of classic console UI customizations.
Audio Focus: Immersive Sound, Personalized
Audio Focus is a new setting that lets players fine-tune their in-game sound experience. Whether it’s character dialogue, subtle effects like footsteps, or voice chat during multiplayer, this feature lets users boost specific sound frequencies to match their hearing preferences.
Players can choose from four focus types:
- Boost Low Pitch for rumbles and deep engine sounds
- Boost Voices for clearer speech and dialogue
- Boost High Pitch for sharper sounds like footsteps
- Boost Quiet Sounds for subtle audio details across all pitches
Each preset can be adjusted to Weak, Medium, or Strong levels, and you can customize left and right ear balance separately.
The feature works with headphones connected via USB or analog jack, but not over HDMI through TVs or sound systems.
To activate:
Go to Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus
You can also toggle it from the Control Center while gaming.
Classic Console Themes Return to PS5
After a warm reception during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations, Sony is officially bringing back the beloved UI customizations from previous PlayStation consoles—PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4.
This feature, now called Appearance, allows players to give their PS5 home screen a nostalgic twist using designs from the brand’s history. It’s available under the Settings menu, offering a personalized look with a retro feel.
Rollout Begins April 24
The update will be released globally in phases starting April 24. Sony invites players to explore the new features and share feedback on which additions they’re most excited about.
