Gemini Lets Free Users Analyze Files, But NotebookLM Does It Better

Google has finally introduced free document uploads for Gemini users, allowing them to analyze files without needing the Gemini Advanced subscription.

Users can now upload PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and TXT files directly to Gemini for summarization, insights, and key point extraction. However, Excel and CSV files are not supported, which limits data analysis capabilities.

Gemini already supported image analysis, and now it also allows integration with Google Drive, making it easier to share and analyze Google Docs files. While this update is a welcome addition, Google’s own NotebookLM remains a better tool for document analysis.

NotebookLM offers in-line citations, letting users verify sources easily—something missing in Gemini. It also includes an AI-generated podcast feature, making it more interactive.

For those looking to upload and analyze documents for free, Gemini now offers a solid option, but if you need more in-depth analysis and better citation features, NotebookLM is the better choice.
