Google Gemini Adds Recall Feature, Competing with ChatGPT’s Memory

Google has just released a much-needed upgrade to its Gemini AI chatbot, adding a memory feature that allows the AI to remember previous conversations.

This new “recall” function is available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, who will now be able to ask Gemini about past chats and continue conversations without having to start over.

This upgrade brings Gemini closer to its competitor, ChatGPT, which has offered a memory feature for over a year. However, ChatGPT’s memory functionality is available for free, while Google’s recall feature requires a paid subscription. There’s no news yet on whether Google will offer this feature to free users.

The memory function adds a significant level of convenience, as Gemini can now recall personal details or past topics without needing reminders. Previously, users had to constantly repeat information, making conversations feel less natural.

With the new recall feature, you can ask things like, “Remember that time I talked to you about train travel? What was the route you suggested?”—an ability that brings the AI closer to being more conversational and aware of your history.

This update follows a previous improvement to Gemini in November, where the AI could remember some personal preferences, but the new recall feature allows for a broader and more seamless experience.

While the recall feature is a step forward for Google Gemini, some users are still hoping that Google will eventually roll it out to free users, as it is one of the most important upgrades for AI chatbots.

Until then, users might continue to favor ChatGPT, which offers similar functionality without the paywall.
