Former PlayStation CEO Explains Why PS6 Might Still Have Discs

Former PlayStation boss, Shawn Layden, believes that a fully disc-less PlayStation 6 might not be feasible.

Speaking in a recent interview, Layden expressed his doubts about Sony’s ability to release an all-digital console, citing the challenges of supporting players without reliable internet connections.

Layden acknowledged that Xbox has had success with an all-digital strategy, especially in countries like the US, UK, and Australia.

However, he pointed out that Sony’s PlayStation dominates in over 170 countries worldwide, many of which have limited internet access. He questioned if players in rural areas or military bases without stable connections would be able to enjoy a digital-only PlayStation.

Layden also mentioned that PlayStation consoles are often used in places where internet service may not be available, such as by athletes on the go or military personnel.

A fully digital PS6 could limit these users’ ability to play games without reliable internet, potentially damaging Sony’s global market.

While Layden acknowledged that there may be a tipping point where Sony could shift away from physical discs, he believes it would be difficult to go fully digital, given the diversity of PlayStation’s global user base.
