Paragon Ends Spyware Contract with Italy Amid WhatsApp Breach Allegations

Paragon Solutions, the cyber-intelligence firm accused of supplying spyware used in an alleged WhatsApp hacking campaign, has ended its contract with Italy.

The decision comes after reports that an Italian journalist and two activists critical of Italy’s government were among the targets.

The spyware, known as Graphite, is similar to Pegasus and can infect a phone without the user’s knowledge. WhatsApp revealed that at least 90 individuals across multiple countries may have been affected.

Italy’s opposition parties are now demanding answers, questioning whether the government was involved in purchasing and deploying the spyware.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office denied any involvement, but the controversy continues to raise concerns over press freedom and privacy.

The Italian government has acknowledged that WhatsApp identified at least seven Italian citizens as potential targets, but it remains unclear who ordered the surveillance.

Paragon, reportedly acquired by the U.S. firm AE Industrial Partners, has refused to comment on specific client relationships. Meanwhile, Italy faces growing political pressure to clarify its role in the scandal as investigations continue.
