Google Maps

Google is working on a new Gemini feature that will let users ask AI-powered contextual questions about places in Google Maps.

This feature, spotted in Google app v16.4.35 beta, introduces a new “Ask about place” chip, allowing users to quickly attach location context to their queries.

How It Works

When Google Maps is open, triggering Gemini will display an “Ask about place” button. Tapping it attaches a Google Maps link to the search box, enabling users to ask AI-powered questions about locations they see.

When Will It Launch?

This feature is still in development and hasn’t been rolled out yet. While current tests show some inconsistencies—like not recognizing cities but working for specific locations—Google is expected to refine it before release.

Why It Matters

  • Smarter local search: Users can ask Gemini detailed questions about places without manually entering location names.
  • Seamless integration: Google continues to embed AI into its ecosystem, making interactions more natural.
  • Faster access to insights: Expect real-time suggestions and detailed place descriptions powered by AI.

Google hasn’t confirmed a release date, but this update aligns with its broader push to enhance Gemini’s capabilities across its services.
