Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King may have had a slower start compared to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but it’s making a strong comeback.
After 45 days in theaters, Mufasa is set to surpass Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the domestic box office, with earnings of $229.5M compared to Sonic’s $230.5M.
Mufasa will also be released on PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) starting February 18, 2025, after a 60-day theatrical run. The film will be available on popular platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
This longer theatrical window has helped Mufasa maintain a strong presence in theaters, particularly on key Imax and PLF screens. The movie’s global box office stands at $652M, a solid performance considering its $200M production budget.
While it’s not quite on the level of the original Lion King (which earned $1.66B in 2019), Mufasa has still done well, especially compared to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which grossed $462.5M worldwide off a lower production budget of $122M.
The Blu-ray, DVD, and digital versions of Mufasa will be available starting April 1, 2025. Bonus features will include a sing-along version, behind-the-scenes documentaries, deleted scenes, and a music video for the song “I Always Wanted a Brother.”
