Leaked Report Exposes Dangerous Crypto Apps on Google Play Store

A new security report has uncovered serious privacy risks in popular crypto apps on the Google Play Store, raising alarms about permission abuse, data breaches, and hidden trackers.

What the Report Found

Security researchers at Leakd examined 51 top-downloaded crypto apps and found that many request unnecessary permissions, contain hardcoded secrets (like API keys), and fail to meet basic security standards.

These flaws could allow hackers to steal user data, take over accounts, and track personal activity.

Why This Matters

Unlike iPhones, which offer stricter privacy controls, Android apps can silently collect sensitive data without users realizing it.

While Google is improving security with live threat detection, this report shows that many apps still pose serious risks.

Leakd warns that excessive permissions make it easier for attackers to exploit users. Some apps request as many as 45 different permissions, creating a huge attack surface for potential cyber threats.

How to Stay Safe

  • Check App Permissions: Before installing an app, review what it asks for and deny unnecessary requests.
  • Choose Secure Apps: Stick with apps that have a strong security track record.
  • Use Separate Wallets: If dealing with cryptocurrency, avoid storing large amounts in apps with poor security practices.

The Bottom Line

Google needs to crack down on permission abuse, but until that happens, Android users must stay alert. Always verify app permissions and use trusted apps to keep your data safe.
