Taiwan Responds to Trump: U.S.-Taiwan Chip Industry Is Mutually Beneficial

Taiwan’s economy ministry defended its semiconductor partnership with the U.S. on Tuesday, calling it a “win-win” model amid tariff threats from President Donald Trump.

Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imported chips, steel, and pharmaceuticals to boost U.S. manufacturing.

Taiwan, home to TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, emphasized that U.S. designs and Taiwan’s manufacturing complement each other.

Key Points:

  • TSMC has invested $65 billion in U.S. chip production, including a factory in Arizona.
  • Taiwan’s high-tech exports to the U.S. hit a record $111.4 billion in 2024, up 83%.
  • Taiwan expects minimal impact from tariffs due to its advanced technology.

While TSMC declined to comment, Taiwan promised to work with U.S. officials to maintain mutual benefits.
