In Squid Game Season 2, Gi-hun’s return to the deadly games surprises many, given his traumatic experiences in the first season.
After winning the 45.6 billion won prize, Gi-hun struggles with survivor’s guilt and the emotional scars left by the games.
Despite his newfound fortune, he is unable to find peace and chooses not to board a plane to reunite with his daughter, instead calling the number on a recruiter’s card and discovering that the games are still ongoing.
At the end of Season 1, Gi-hun wins the final game but loses his childhood friend, Sang-woo, who sacrifices himself to allow Gi-hun to win.
Overcome by guilt, Gi-hun returns to a life of isolation, using his money to help others, like purchasing a fish shop for Sang-woo’s mother. He is haunted by his past and ultimately decides to investigate the ongoing games, unable to ignore the cruelty he once faced.
In Season 2, Gi-hun teams up with Detective Jun-ho, the Front Man’s brother, and together they attempt to uncover the true nature of the games.
After a tense game of Russian Roulette, Gi-hun rejoins the games, determined to stop them and save future participants. His decision is driven by his sense of responsibility to prevent others from suffering the same fate.
Despite his initial plan to escape, Gi-hun continues to fight within the games, using his knowledge of their inner workings to his advantage.
He grows closer to the Front Man, unaware that he is Player 001, the mastermind behind the games. Gi-hun’s return is not just about survival but about understanding the system and stopping the cycle of violence.
To track the games’ location, Jun-ho and Gi-hun plant a tracker in Gi-hun’s tooth. However, the tracker is quickly removed, and Gi-hun’s attempt to escape becomes even more perilous.
As the Front Man denies Gi-hun’s request to end the games, the stakes grow higher, and Jun-ho’s mission to locate the island intensifies.
Gi-hun’s return to the games is also a quest to learn more about the system that controls them. As he grows closer to the Front Man, he uncovers details about the games’ origins and the elites who continue to fund them.
The season ends on a cliffhanger, with Gi-hun’s friend, Jung-bae, being murdered by the Front Man after an uprising.
With the final season expected in 2025, fans are left wondering whether Gi-hun will be able to end the games once and for all.
