Microsoft has announced 2025 as “the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh,” urging users to upgrade as Windows 10 approaches its end-of-support date on October 14, 2025.

In a blog post ahead of CES 2025, Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi highlighted Windows 11’s new AI features and enhanced security, claiming the OS is essential for the future.

The Push for Windows 11

Mehdi emphasized that Windows 11 offers advanced AI capabilities, improved functionality, and a familiar user experience. However, upgrading to Windows 11 often requires new hardware due to its steep system requirements, leaving many older PCs unsupported.

Microsoft argues this shift is about keeping users secure, but critics suggest it’s more about driving hardware sales. Mehdi stated, “We believe Windows 11 is available at a time when the world needs it most.”

Adoption Challenges

Despite Microsoft’s efforts, Windows 11 adoption remains slow, with over 60% of PCs still running Windows 10 at the end of 2024, according to StatCounter. Some enterprises even downgrade new Windows 11 machines to Windows 10 for better stability and compatibility.

Microsoft’s Copilot+ branded AI PCs, promoted as faster and smarter, have also faced criticism. Many users report underwhelming performance, particularly in gaming, and even Microsoft’s own AI assistant has admitted that these PCs fall short of expectations.

What’s Next?

As the end-of-support deadline for Windows 10 looms, Microsoft is doubling down on its push for Windows 11, regardless of user hesitation. The company remains firm on its hardware requirements, leaving older PCs with few options.

Whether users embrace this vision or resist the shift, 2025 is shaping up to be a critical year for Microsoft’s Windows strategy.
