After China, Apple Forced to Remove VPN Apps in India

Apple has begun removing VPN apps from its App Store in India, following the enforcement of a 2022 law that bans anonymous VPN usage.

The Indian government now requires VPN providers to maintain detailed user records, including names, addresses, and transaction histories, for five years.

VPN Apps Under Scrutiny

This move echoes Apple’s earlier compliance in China, where hundreds of VPN apps were removed in 2017 under similar restrictions.

In India, the crackdown has started with the removal of more than half a dozen VPN apps, including Cloudflare’s popular 1.1.1.1, from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The enforcement of India’s anti-privacy law had faced delays due to objections, but the Ministry of Home Affairs has now issued removal orders.

Apple and Google have complied, with Google disclosing these takedown requests to Lumen, a Harvard University database tracking government censorship globally.
