Apple is reportedly working on a new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, codenamed “Proxima,” set to debut in 2025.
The chip will first appear in updated Apple TV and HomePod mini models, supporting advanced connectivity standards like Wi-Fi 6E.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, these chips may later feature in iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
However, despite the advanced technology, Apple has no plans to revive its AirPort routers, a product line discontinued in 2018.
Instead, Gurman suggests that the new Apple TV or HomePod mini could theoretically act as wireless access points due to the chip’s sophistication. However, there’s no confirmation Apple will pursue this feature.
The Proxima chips are being developed in partnership with TSMC, highlighting Apple’s commitment to creating custom wireless solutions for its devices.
While AirPort fans may be disappointed, Apple’s focus appears to be on integrating wireless connectivity into its existing product ecosystem.
