Park Gyu-young plays an unexpected and complex character in Squid Game season 2. Known for her roles in shows like Sweet Home and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Park is a new addition to the series.
Her character, No-eul, is not a contestant in the deadly games but a guard with a dark and twisted backstory.
At first, it seems like No-eul might be a player. However, as the season progresses, it is revealed that she is one of the masked guards, specifically a sniper during the Red Light, Green Light game. She wears a triangle-shaped mask, indicating her mid-level rank among the guards.
No-eul’s story is more than just about her role in the games. She is a North Korean deserter, having fled her country after attacking a superior.
She left her daughter behind, who was only one year old at the time. Desperate to reunite with her, No-eul seeks the help of a private investigator. Unfortunately, the investigator tells her that her past makes finding her daughter nearly impossible.
To fund her search, No-eul joins the Squid Game as a guard. She believes the money from the games could help her hire a better investigator to find her daughter.
However, things take a darker turn when she becomes involved in the guards’ illegal organ trade operation. Unlike other guards, No-eul refuses to participate in this, even killing a fellow guard who tries to justify it.
No-eul’s defiance against the corrupt system leads to tension with other guards and the Officer, who hired her out of sympathy for her past.
The Officer reminds No-eul that she once claimed she would do anything to find her daughter, but No-eul now refuses to compromise her morals for money.
As Squid Game season 2 unfolds, No-eul’s journey becomes a fight not only for survival but for the chance to reconnect with her lost family.
Her story adds a new layer of complexity to the series, showing how personal desperation can lead people down dark paths, even when they try to hold onto their humanity.
