The Anvil engine, the backbone of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series since its debut in 2007, remains central to the franchise’s latest installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set to release on February 14, 2025.

Originally known as Scimitar, this engine has undergone significant transformations over the years, adapting to new console generations and evolving to meet the demands of each game.

Pierre Fortin, a Ubisoft veteran, highlighted the engine’s continuous development, stating that while its core purpose remains unchanged, most of its components have been replaced or upgraded.

This adaptability has allowed Ubisoft to maintain creative control and optimize game features without switching to third-party engines like Unreal.

For Shadows, the Anvil engine introduces advanced features such as dynamic seasons, interactive weather, environmental destruction, and improved crowd and NPC behavior.

These innovations ensure the game’s feudal Japan setting feels immersive and alive, showcasing the engine’s ability to push the boundaries of realism.

From its origins as Scimitar to its current state, the Anvil engine exemplifies how technology can evolve over time, enabling Ubisoft to deliver ambitious and visually stunning experiences with each new Assassin’s Creed title.
