Google Messages Rolls Out New Features: What’s New?

Google Messages is adding new features to improve how users send and receive messages.

Some updates are still in beta testing, while others are now available for all users. Here’s a breakdown of the latest changes.

Features Still in Beta

  1. Text Field Redesign:
    The text box has been redesigned and now aligns to the left. It includes icons for attachments, emojis, and the gallery.
  2. Camera and Gallery Merger:
    The live camera view and gallery are now combined. Users can send photos in either “optimized” or “original quality.”
  3. Magic Compose in Reply Suggestions:
    Magic Compose is now visible in the suggested replies row for easier access.
  4. Double Tap for Reactions:
    Users can double-tap a message to add a reaction, like a heart or thumbs-up.
  5. Read Receipts Redesign:
    Read receipts now appear as icons in the bottom-right corner of message bubbles.
  6. Dual SIM RCS Support:
    Google is testing support for two SIM cards with RCS, including physical and eSIM combinations.
  7. Enhanced Scam Detection:
    A new on-device model improves spam detection, especially for package delivery and job-related scams.
  8. RCS Status Indicator Update:
    The “RCS message” label now appears as “(RCS)” for clarity.

Recent Features Now Stable

Profile Settings:
Users can set their name and photo visibility for contacts. Options include sharing with everyone, only contacts, or no one.

  1. Screen Effects:
    Fun animations like balloons, confetti, and seasonal effects are available for specific keywords like “Congratulations” or “Merry Christmas.”
  2. Voice Recorder Redesign:
    The voice recorder now includes noise cancellation and mood settings.
  3. Custom Backgrounds:
    Users can personalize chat bubbles and backgrounds.
  4. Full RCS Transfer:
    Pixel 9 users can fully transfer RCS messages between devices.
