James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has shed light on the surprising development of the upcoming Clayface movie, set to release on September 11, 2026.
Written by Mike Flanagan, the film focuses on the iconic DC character. Despite initial skepticism, Gunn shared how the project gained traction due to its compelling premise.
In an interview with io9, Gunn revealed that he had no plans for a Clayface movie until Flanagan pitched an idea that impressed him. โMike came in and pitched this wonderful idea,โ Gunn said. โI was like, โDamn, I canโt believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie.โโ
Gunn further explained the process, highlighting Flanaganโs evolving drafts: โFirst draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then Iโm like, โLetโs do it.โโ
The DCU’s Philosophy: Quality Over Quantity
Gunn emphasized that the DCU is prioritizing quality over churning out numerous projects. โIf thereโs quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in,โ he stated. However, Gunn also cautioned fans about relying on rumors.
He clarified that while many projects are in development, not all will make it to production. โJust because theyโre in development, that doesnโt mean [DC is] going to make that movie,โ he warned, urging fans to temper their expectations.
A New Direction for the DCU
The Clayface movie aligns with Gunnโs broader vision for the DCU: creating unique, high-quality films that resonate with fans.
He pointed to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as another example, chosen for its strong story rather than its place in a grand narrative. Gunn emphasized, โEverything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do.โ
Taking Risks with “Weird” Properties
The decision to green-light a Clayface film underscores DC Studiosโ willingness to take creative risks. By exploring lesser-known characters and unusual premises, the DCU aims to build goodwill with fans through quality storytelling.
Gunnโs approach focuses on delivering standout films rather than chasing box office numbers, a strategy that could redefine the franchiseโs future.
As the DCU ventures into uncharted territory, fans can look forward to a mix of bold, innovative projects.
With Clayface set to hit theaters in 2026, this shift in focus might just pave the way for a new era of superhero cinema.
