Mufasa: The Lion King’ Earns $122 Million Globally, Falls Short of Projections

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” has had a strong start at the global box office, but it didn’t quite live up to expectations.

The prequel to the 2019 remake of “The Lion King” earned $87.2 million overseas and $122 million worldwide.

While it topped the box office, it fell short of the predicted $130 million overseas and $180 million globally.

In North America, the film made $35 million, landing in second place behind Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which earned $62 million. “Mufasa” also faced mixed reviews, which may have affected its performance.

China was the biggest market for “Mufasa,” bringing in $7.8 million. Other top markets included France ($7.7 million), Mexico ($7.1 million), and the UK ($5.5 million).

Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film explores the early life of Mufasa, voiced by Aaron Pierre, with Lin-Manuel Miranda providing the music.

The movie has a large budget of over $200 million, so Disney hopes it will continue to perform well through the holiday season.

Meanwhile, “Moana 2” added $32.8 million from 52 territories and has made $431 million internationally.

Universal’s “Wicked” has earned $571 million globally, while Paramount’s “Gladiator II” reached $416 million.

Disney will be hoping that “Mufasa” picks up steam in the coming weeks to justify its high production costs.
