Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is off to a speedy start, leading the North American box office with $25.7 million from Friday and preview screenings.

In comparison, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King trails behind, earning $13.3 million over the same period.

Sonic Speeds Ahead

Paramount’s Sonic 3 has exceeded expectations, nearing the $26 million opening day of its predecessor, Sonic 2 (2022). The film, budgeted at $122 million, benefits from positive reviews and an “A” grade from CinemaScore.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, the movie features Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) teaming up with Tails, Knuckles, and his human father figure to face Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) and Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

With kids out of school and families seeking holiday entertainment, Sonic 3 is projected to surpass its $55-$60 million opening weekend forecast.

Mufasa’s Slow Start

Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 remake, debuted with $13.3 million despite its hefty $200 million budget.

Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film received an “A-” CinemaScore but lacks the hype of its predecessor, which opened to $191 million domestically. Disney is counting on international audiences to bolster the film’s performance.

Other Box Office Highlights

  • Moana 2: Continues its strong run with $3 million on Friday, pushing its North American total past $350 million.
  • Wicked: Earned $14 million in its fifth weekend, nearing $400 million domestically.
  • Homestead: Angel Studios’ post-apocalyptic drama opened with $2.8 million on Friday, aiming for a $5 million weekend.
  • Kraven the Hunter: Plummeted 72% in its second weekend, earning $3.1 million.

With Sonic 3 leading the pack, the holiday season box office is off to a promising start.
