David Ayer, director of the 2016 Suicide Squad, has spoken out in support of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film.

Ayer responded to fan backlash over his support, emphasizing the importance of unity among filmmakers.

Ayer’s Message to Fans

Ahead of the Superman trailer release, Ayer asked his fans to pause campaigns promoting his cut of Suicide Squad. On X, he wrote:

“I didn’t realize James was dropping ‘Creature Commandos’ when the last Ayer cut campaign hit…the new Superman trailer is dropping soon and I know there’s intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad.”

He later expressed his excitement for Gunn’s work, saying:

“As a filmmaker I want to support other filmmakers…I cannot wait to see James’ trailer. Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film. The simple optimism of Superman is all over it, and the little kid in me needs that right now.”

Addressing Backlash

On Dec. 18, Ayer responded to criticism over his stance, writing:

“If supporting another filmmaker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point…Comic books were my best friends during a nightmare childhood. They gave me company when no one else did.”

Ayer reaffirmed his belief in Gunn’s vision and hinted at taking a step back, though he did not clarify whether this referred to social media or the film industry.

Updates on the Ayer Cut

Ayer previously discussed the potential release of his Suicide Squad cut with Gunn. In August, he wrote:

“The interest in my cut being [shown] seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared. He deserves to launch his DC Universe without more drama about old projects.”

In a 2023 interview with Total Film, Ayer expressed optimism, saying:

“It’s coming. Something’s going to happen. The truth always comes out.”

Ayer’s recent comments reflect his commitment to supporting fellow filmmakers while navigating fan expectations for his unreleased work.
