Bob Iger’s return as Disney CEO brought a renewed focus on combining distribution and creative divisions.
This shift led to the successful release of Moana 2, which grossed $386 million worldwide, marking a comeback after misfires like The Marvels and Wish. Originally planned as a Disney+ series, the sequel’s theatrical release paid off, signaling a return to cinema for Disney projects.
Though Disney has struggled in some areas, like Pixar and live-action films, it remained a box office leader for years, narrowly losing the top spot to Universal in 2023. Moana 2 also avoided political controversy, unlike previous films such as Lightyear, which had faced backlash from conservative groups.
Looking ahead, Disney’s live-action and animated projects, like Mufasa and Lilo & Stitch, are set to continue the momentum.
However, the upcoming Snow White remake has been dogged by controversies over star Rachel Zegler’s social media posts, which could complicate Disney’s strategy to avoid divisive issues.
Despite this, Disney’s ability to turn animated classics into live-action hits, such as The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, remains a significant strength.
