Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has shared his belief that design by committee can harm a game’s identity.

In an interview for Edge magazine, he explained that while input from others, such as producer Yoshinori Kitase, is valuable, the development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth has been led by a smaller, cohesive team to maintain the game’s unique character.

Hamaguchi emphasized that “too many cooks spoil the broth,” suggesting that an overload of ideas and opinions could dilute the game’s direction.

This approach has already contributed to the success of both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, with the latter receiving widespread praise and multiple awards, including four wins at the Golden Joystick Awards in November.

With the third installment of the trilogy now in development, the expectations for its release are higher than ever, thanks to Hamaguchi’s successful strategy of focusing on a unified creative vision.
