Google Maps Enhances Walking Directions with Stair Alerts

Google Maps has introduced a handy feature that makes walking directions more intuitive.

The update now includes stair “callouts,” highlighted with blue icons or pins directly integrated into the navigation route.

This enhancement replaces the older design, where stair indicators were merely overlaid on the map without being tied to the direction dots.

The new feature aims to give users a clearer view of stairs along their route, allowing them to better prepare or avoid such paths if needed.

This builds on last year’s addition of wheelchair-accessible routes, where users could choose “Avoid stairs and prefer elevators” under the “Trip options” menu.

This setting benefits not only wheelchair users but also travelers with strollers, luggage, or other needs.

Stair callouts are part of a broader push to make Google Maps more accessible and user-friendly, complementing features like stair indicators in cycling directions. The rollout began earlier this month on both Android and iOS.

With these continuous updates, Google Maps continues to refine the walking experience, ensuring greater convenience and accessibility for all users.
