Steam has officially ended support for Windows 7 and 8 with its latest client update, released on November 5, 2024.
The update will no longer function on these older operating systems, following Valve’s announcement earlier this year.
Steam users on these OSes will no longer receive updates, and while the client and games may still work for a while, continued functionality cannot be guaranteed after January 1, 2024.
The decision to stop supporting Windows 7 and 8 was driven by changes to the embedded version of Google Chrome in Steam, which no longer supports these older systems.
According to Steam’s October hardware survey, just 0.28% of users were still on Windows 7, and Windows 8 had no reported users at all.
For those still on these operating systems, it might be time to upgrade as Steam’s functionality on them will decline without further updates.
