The creative team behind The Expanse is returning to Amazon with a new sci-fi series, The Captive’s War.

This adaptation is based on the book trilogy by James S.A. Corey (the pen name of The Expanse authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). The first novel in the series, The Mercy of Gods, debuted in August and became a New York Times bestseller.

Set in a future of galactic empires and alien civilizations, the series is inspired by the biblical Book of Daniel. It follows a group of prisoners who rebel against their oppressors, showcasing the resilience of individuality in a totalitarian world.

The series will reunite showrunner Naren Shankar, directors Breck Eisner, Abraham, and Franck. Shankar will serve as writer and showrunner, with Eisner directing.

This marks the first project under Expanding Universe, the new media company launched by the creators. The company plans to explore sci-fi storytelling across multiple platforms, including film, gaming, and publishing.

“The Captive’s War” follows in the footsteps of The Expanse, which was praised for its complex world-building and engaging characters over six seasons. The creators aim to use their expertise to bring more ambitious sci-fi narratives to life.

Stay tuned for more updates from Expanding Universe as they unveil additional projects.
