A new statue of England football captain Harry Kane has been unveiled in Waltham Forest, London, quickly becoming the latest sports sculpture to face public criticism for its visual inaccuracies.
Located at the Peter May Sports Centre, the bronze statue follows a trend of controversial sports monuments that have failed to capture the likeness of their subjects.
Art critic Estelle Lovatt commented on the broader issue, noting that public statues are meant to immortalize and celebrate achievements.
Kane himself expressed excitement about the statue, viewing it as an opportunity to inspire young athletes from his hometown. The sculpture was originally planned for Chingford Station but was delayed due to concerns about distracting train drivers.
The statue joins a growing list of sports statues that have been ridiculed for their questionable artistic representations, including similar sculptures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Maradona, and Dwyane Wade.
Originally intended to be unveiled years ago, the statue now stands at the sports center Kane opened in 2016, near the facilities of his boyhood club, Ridgeway Rovers.
