Valve Rumored to be Developing Steam Android Emulator

Recent reports suggest that Valve, the company behind Steam and the Steam Deck, may be working on an Android emulator. This information comes from Brad Lynch, XR Project Manager at EOZVR, who discovered references to ‘WayDroid’ in a Steam change list update related to SteamVR.

WayDroid is a tool that allows GNU/Linux users to run Android apps and systems in a container, potentially offering near-native performance when using Wayland. While Valve’s exact plans for this technology remain unclear, speculation points to possible VR applications, given Android’s history of VR support and the fact that Meta’s Quest Horizon OS is Android-based.

This development aligns with Valve’s recent focus on hardware innovation and software improvements. As the company continues to expand its offerings, an Android emulator could open up new possibilities for Steam users and potentially enhance the Steam Deck’s capabilities.

Valve has not officially commented on these rumors. More details are expected to emerge as the project develops.
