Tom Morello has debuted “Soldier in the Army of Love,” a rock-rap fusion single co-written with his 13-year-old son, Roman. The track, featuring Roman’s guitar work, is the first release from Morello’s upcoming solo rock album.
The song blends diverse references over a funky riff, with a musical theater-style chorus. Morello describes it as a tribute to music’s power to heal and fight for justice.
Produced by Zakk Cervini and Carl Restivo, the single comes as Morello tours Europe. It follows his recent solo appearance at Rage Against the Machine’s Rock Hall induction, where he honored his bandmates and the group’s message.
Soldier in the Army of Love Tom Morello Lyrics
Iโm a soldier in the army of love
Transforming motherfuckers like Saul into Paul
On the road to Damascus at the Westfield Mall
In the maquiladoras and at Carnegie Hall
In the grain elevator making fascists crawl
On the banks of the Volga
Watching Messerschmidts fall
Lunatic on the corner when theyโre dropping the ball
On New Yearโs Eve, weโre taking it all
On New Yearโs Eve, weโre taking it all
Iโm a soldier (I’m a soldier)
In the army (In the army)
Of love (Of love)
Trained to fetch, beg stay and sit
Research suggests youโre all full of shit
Ainโt fixinโ to crawl, Iโm fixinโ to spit
Like if Secretariat spit the bit
Like if Joe be Strumming, like if London be Calling
My trumpetโs blaring and Jerichoโs falling
A hood and a badge, cash, credit or check
But the maidโs got a secret, sheโs seeing you next
She sprayed the whole office then mopped up the floor
Black History Month got one chapter more
Iโm a soldier (I’m a soldier)
In the army (In the army)
Of love (Of love)
Coal in the lungs, lead in the water
The lambs got together, led the butcher to the slaughter
I know the girl who set them free and Iโm glad they never caught her
Tectonic plates set to shift
Border patrolโll never catch this riff
Gotta turn your illness to a weapon, son
Who needs a weapon when you were born one?
Iโm a soldier (I’m a soldier)
In the army (In the army)
Of love (Of love)
