Sociopaths inspire movies and books, but they represent a real condition called Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). This disorder affects 4 to 11 percent of the UK population, per Bournemouth University.

People with ASPD often act aggressively, show hostility, or harm others. They display impulsivity, lack sensitivity, disrespect others, and feel superior, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Experts provide this seven-trait checklist to spot sociopaths in your life, such as a partner or sibling.

1. Rebelling Against Authority

People with ASPD defy rules and leaders more than others. They prefer consequences over compliance, notes The Telegraph. This includes petty crimes like shoplifting or worse.

2. Frequently Breaking Rules

A lack of empathy leads them to ignore risks. They underestimate danger and feel fear late, say studies. They break any barrier in their path.

3. Sudden Charming or Relatable Behavior

Sociopaths charm to gain power and feel grand, says Sumeet Grover, a registered psychotherapist. This hides their fragmented self and lack of true empathy or remorse. Their charm feels believable.

4. Refusing to Apologize

People with ASPD struggle to admit fault or say sorry, even if they know right from wrong. They lack real remorse, explains clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Orban.

5. Difficulty Keeping Relationships

They form shallow bonds and mimic love without depth, says clinical psychiatrist Dr. Tharaka Gunarathne. They shine in groups but fail one-on-one.

6. Drive for Control

Sociopaths dissect your choices, threaten, or use silent treatment. Dr. Gunarathne warns to avoid those needing “fixing.” Charm hides high emotional costs.

7. Manipulating the Truth

They gaslight to make you doubt your memory or sanity. This grabs power. Counselling psychologist Dr. Ute Liersch notes living with them alters brain function like drugs, causing addiction and painful withdrawal.
