Taiwanese Mandopop star Jay Chou has officially joined Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, drawing more than 11 million followers within a day—despite not posting a single video.

Chou, 46, launched his account under the name “Classmate Chou” on July 9 at 11am. Within one hour, the follower count had already surpassed one million, according to Chinese media. By the afternoon of July 10, the number had soared past 11 million.

Rumors circulated online that Douyin had paid a nine-figure sum to bring Chou onto the platform. However, Chinese news outlet Guancha reported that the company denied these claims.

Chou’s presence on Douyin gave a noticeable boost to Star Plus Legend, a company co-founded by his mother Yeh Hui-mei. According to the Hong Kong Economic Journal, the firm’s shares more than doubled on July 9, reaching a high of HK$17 before closing at HK$12.44.

This is Chou’s second major Chinese-language social media account. In 2020, he joined Kuaishou, a rival platform to Douyin, where he currently has about 48 million followers. However, that account has been inactive for over three months.

Outside of Chinese platforms, Chou remains active on Instagram and Facebook, with around 10.4 million and 4.3 million followers, respectively.

His debut on Douyin marks a major move in the online entertainment scene, reaffirming his continued popularity in the region’s digital space.
