A British anesthesiologist is under review after leaving an operation midway to have sex with a nurse in another room, according to multiple reports.

Dr. Suhail Anjum, 44, walked out during a gallbladder removal surgery at Tameside Hospital in Manchester in September 2023. He told colleagues he needed a “comfort break” and asked another staff member to monitor the patient. Eight minutes later, he returned and completed the procedure.

A fellow nurse discovered Anjum and the unidentified nurse in a “compromising position” while searching for equipment for the next operation.

Anjum admitted the incident and described his actions as inexcusable. He said he had been experiencing personal stress due to problems at home following the premature birth of his daughter.

The case resurfaced this week because Anjum is seeking to return to medical practice in the United Kingdom. A professional panel is now deciding whether he remains fit to work as a doctor.
